Characteristics of Emo Hairstyles

Although emo hairstyles are meant to be a unique reflection of one’s own personal style, most emo ‘dos reflect some common elements. These characteristics help define a style as emo. Throughout almost all emo hairstyles, it seems dyes are used to turn hair a deep black.

Other common color characteristics include adding streaks of blonde, red, or blue to this dark base. Additionally, emo hairstyles are usually layered. Whether cut short or long, these layers provide depth and texture. They also make it easier to style hair in that “purposefully messy” look that emo people try to achieve.

Emo hairstyles are also trimmed using the razored cut method. This means the ends of hair are trimmed and angled using a blade rather than a scissor. This results in an edgy, wilder look than a traditional cut with blunt ends.

All emo hairstyles feature bangs, which are left comparatively long. The goal is to part bangs on the side so that they fall in front of one eye. Finally, emo hair is usually styled with a flat iron to create a straight texture. It may then be tousled with wax or gel to add shape and, sometimes, spikes.
